Why Your Camera Brand Choice Matters More Than You Think
Walk into any security supplier in Dubai and they’ll tell you their brand is “the best.” The truth is more nuanced — and more useful. Every major CCTV brand has a specific type of project it genuinely excels at, and choosing the wrong one means you either overpay for features you don’t need, or underbuy and end up with footage that’s too blurry to identify a face when you actually need it.
The brand you choose affects five things that matter long-term: image quality in UAE heat and night conditions, integration with your access control and BMS systems, SIRA compliance, local availability of replacement parts, and the usability of the mobile app your team will use every single day.
This guide cuts through the sales pitch. We’ve installed CCTV systems in villas, warehouses, retail stores, office towers, hotels, and hospitals across UAE. Here’s what we’ve learned — without the commercial interest to push any particular brand.
IP CCTV holds a 67.8% market share in UAE as of 2025. The UAE security market is growing at 8.2% annually, driven by SIRA compliance requirements, smart city initiatives, and increasing commercial development in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Brand-by-Brand Comparison — All Tiers
🏆 Enterprise Tier
Axis Communications (Sweden) — The premium choice and the brand that essentially invented the network camera. Axis is found in banks, embassies, airports, government buildings, and data centres. Every camera is built with cybersecurity at the hardware level — encrypted boot process, signed firmware, automatic network anomaly detection. NDAA compliant, meaning US and NATO government contracts can specify Axis without restriction. The honest downside: a comparable Axis camera costs 3–5× the price of Hikvision. For a standard commercial office, you’re paying for features the application doesn’t need.
Hanwha Vision (South Korea, formerly Samsung) — Outstanding in high-contrast environments. If you have a car park entrance where it’s bright outside and dark inside, Hanwha’s WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) technology handles this better than almost any other brand. NDAA compliant. Price sits between Hikvision and Axis. Strong local distributor network in UAE.
Bosch Security (Germany) — The reliability choice for industrial and critical infrastructure. Bosch cameras survive environments that would degrade other brands — extreme heat, humidity, vibration. Their VMS (Video Management Software) is enterprise-grade and rock-solid. More expensive than Hikvision, less than Axis.
💼 Professional Tier
Hikvision (China) — The world’s most installed surveillance brand, with the largest product range of any manufacturer. Their AcuSense AI technology reduces false alarms by filtering out animals, leaves, and other non-relevant motion — only alerting to actual people and vehicles. ColorVu cameras produce full-colour footage even in zero-light conditions using a wide-aperture lens. The Hik-Connect mobile app is genuinely easy to use and your FM team can learn it in 20 minutes. Hikvision has extensive local stock across Dubai distributors, meaning replacement units arrive same or next day. Important note for international projects: US federal law (NDAA 2019) prohibits federal agencies from using Hikvision. For UAE commercial use, this is irrelevant.
Dahua Technology (China) — Hikvision’s closest competitor and the AI-first challenger. Dahua’s WizSense range delivers strong human and vehicle classification that’s genuinely accurate for retail, warehouses, and construction sites. Their TiOC (Three-in-One Colour) cameras combine full-colour night vision, a built-in speaker for active deterrence, and AI detection in a single unit — outstanding value for sites needing visible security presence. PTZ camera optics in the mid-range are arguably stronger than Hikvision at the same price point.
🟢 SMB & Budget Tier
Uniview / UNV (China) — Deserves far more attention than it gets in the UAE market. Uniview is typically 15–25% cheaper than Hikvision with genuinely comparable image quality and AI features. The brand is less well-known but the technology is solid. For budget-conscious SMB projects where performance matters but brand prestige doesn’t, UNV is our most recommended value pick.
Tiandy (China) — A growing brand in the UAE SMB market. Pricing is competitive and local distributor presence is improving. Suitable for small retail, offices, and budget residential projects where the system will be monitored by the owner via mobile app rather than a security operations centre.
Provision-ISR (Israel) — Strong brand in the small business and residential segment. Simple setup, good mobile app, competitive pricing. Available through several UAE distributors. Good choice for small retail shops, salons, and small offices up to 8 cameras.
TP-Link Tapo / Reolink — Consumer-grade WiFi cameras. Not suitable for commercial installations, SIRA compliance, or anything requiring 24/7 reliability. Useful only for basic home monitoring where professional-grade systems are not required or budgeted. We do not install these for commercial clients.

NVR and Storage — What You Actually Need
The camera is only half the story. Your NVR (Network Video Recorder) and storage determine how long you can retain footage — which under SIRA requirements for commercial buildings in Dubai must be a minimum of 30 days. Getting this calculation wrong is the most common and most expensive mistake we see.
Storage Calculation
The amount of storage you need depends on: number of cameras, resolution, frames per second, compression standard, and whether cameras use motion-triggered recording or 24/7 continuous recording.
Rough guide for 24/7 recording at H.265+:
2MP camera: ~8GB per day
4MP camera: ~15GB per day
8MP/4K camera: ~28GB per day
For 8 cameras at 4MP recording 24/7 for 30 days: 8 × 15 × 30 = 3,600GB (3.6TB)
Always add 20% headroom → specify a 4TB HDD minimum for this setup.

SIRA Compliance — What It Means for Dubai Buildings
SIRA (Security Industry Regulatory Agency) is Dubai’s authority that regulates all commercial security installations. If you own or operate a commercial building in Dubai and you have CCTV, SIRA compliance is not optional — it is a legal requirement and a condition of your trade licence renewal.
What SIRA Requires
- Minimum 30-day footage retention — your storage must cover 30 days of continuous recording from all cameras
- Minimum resolution standards — facial recognition zones require a minimum of 2MP with specific pixel density at the capture distance
- Coverage requirements — all entry and exit points, car parks, reception areas, and loading bays must be covered
- Tamper detection — cameras must have tamper alerts that notify the system if a camera is moved, covered, or damaged
- System redundancy — backup power (UPS) for NVR and cameras to maintain recording during power interruptions
- NOC submission — technical drawings and equipment specifications must be submitted to SIRA for approval before installation
- Approved installer — your CCTV installer must hold a valid SIRA licence
Operating a commercial property with non-SIRA-compliant CCTV can result in fines and trade licence issues. If an incident occurs on your premises and your CCTV system is non-compliant, your insurance claim may be rejected. RTS handles the complete SIRA submission, approval, and compliance certification process for all our clients.
Real UAE System Pricing — What a Complete Installation Costs
| System Size | Cameras | Storage | Supply Cost | Installation | Total Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small Office / Villa | 4–8 cams (2MP) | 1TB HDD | AED 2,500–5,000 | AED 1,500–2,500 | AED 4,000–7,500 |
| Medium Commercial | 16–32 cams (4MP) | 4–8TB HDD | AED 8,000–18,000 | AED 4,000–8,000 | AED 12,000–26,000 |
| Large Commercial | 48–128 cams (4K) | 16–32TB RAID | AED 35,000–90,000 | AED 15,000–30,000 | AED 50,000–120,000 |
| Enterprise Tower | 128+ cams + VMS | Dedicated server | AED 100,000–300,000 | AED 40,000–80,000 | AED 140,000–380,000 |
These are indicative ranges based on mid-range Hikvision/Dahua equipment. Axis or Hanwha systems run 40–80% higher for the supply cost. UNV/Tiandy systems run 15–25% lower than the Hikvision equivalent. SIRA documentation and compliance adds approximately AED 3,000–8,000 depending on system complexity.
